DARKER COLORED BOLOGCOS

A black and silver girl named Chloe. We do not produce as many darker colored Bologcos as the ligher colored ones, but the dark markings are usually quite striking looking, as in Chloe--the black and silver girl shown to the right--and Chloe lives with her family in St. Augustine, Florida. And the four Bologco girls shown in the picture across the top of this webpage are all different examples of the darker colors. From left to right is Giovanna, a black and silver, who lives with her family in Marietta, Georgia; then Cookie, a solid black girl with white markings, who lives with her family in Archer, Florida; and then McKinley, a merle and tan who also lives with her family in Marietta, Georgia; and to the far right, Gabby, a red sable with a black mask who lives with Giovanna and their family in Marietta, Georgia.

Our solid blacks usually have white tuxedo markings, and some of our blacks gradually develop a gray colored undercoat. And the other dark colors include black and tan, which usually gradually dilutes to black and silver; merle and tan which usually turns to merle and silver; and black masked shaded sables which always have lighter undercoats with a darker overcoat and a black mask with black eartips. But unlike our Havacos, we have no chocolates in the Bologco mix, as chocolate is a recessive color that our Bichon Bolognese stud of all of our Bologco litters so far does not carry.

And we have included black masked sable-merles here too, although the two dogs that we have had marked like this--both named Dixie--have a very light colored body coat with just a few dark hairs on their beards and on their ear tips, as their merle markings did dilute their dark shaded sable overcoats somewhat.

Tucker, a black Bologco.

And the black puppy shown above is named Tucker and he was our first black Bologco here. And by 9 weeks old one could see that he had some gray areas around his eyes, and when his hair was pulled back, some of the hairs looked banded--with gray colored bands closer to the skin, and with black tips. But when he was born this boy looked solid black. And Tucker lives with his family in the Gainesville, Florida area. And we'd love to know if this black colored Tucker eventually turned gray over time, but we do not have any later pictures of him. But in Poodles that eventually gray out, the area around the eyes is the first part of the dog to turn gray.

Two sable Bologco pups at 2 weeks old.

Our next dark Bologco puppies were a boy and a girl in one litter, and the darker one in their puppy picture shown just above is a girl and the lighter one is a boy. But the two sables seemed to have the same color undercoat and we finally decided that the girl had a greater number of black hairs in her overcoat than the boy, giving her a darker appearance. And these solid sable puppies are shown at two weeks old in the above picture.

A sable Bologco pup at 8 weeks old.

And the above picture shows the lighter colored sable boy at 8 weeks old. And this black masked sable boy lives across the street from his white colored littermate and sister named Daisy in Yankeetown, Florida.

A sable Bologco pup at 10 weeks old.

But his sable marked sister, Kailey, stayed very dark, and she lives with her family in Newberry, Florida.

Two black masked sables named Theo and Thia with their family.

And our next dark Bologco puppies are a younger brother and sister to the first two black masked sable Bologco pups, hat went to the same home in Boca Raton, Florida. And shown above are Thia and Theo with their family at their first Christmas in Boca Raton.

Two black masked sables named Theo and Thia who live with their family in Boca Raton, Florida.

And here's a picture of Theo and Thia lounging around at home, and their darker overcoats have lightened in color over time.

And here's another picture of Theo and Thia posing on a chair, and we love the way that they are clipped.

And this picture taken of Theo and Thia from the rear shows off their beautifully colored, sable marked, rather wavy coats.

A merle and tan girl named McKinley and a black and tan girlnamed Giovanna.

And then we had a litter of four all dark girls, as apparently their dam does not carry a recessive "e" allele for the lighter colors. And two of these girls are shown above, and McKinley is the merle and tan girl shown on the left, with her Georgia Tech kerchief, and Giovanna is the black and tan girl on the right, with her University of Georgia kerchief. And both girls live in Marietta, Georgia, and they often have play dates together.

A merle and tan girl named McKinley shown at three months old.

And McKinley is very striking looking at three months old in the picture above, lounging on the couch.

And here's McKinley in her puppy class graduation hat.

A merle and tan girl named McKinley.

But in McKinley's later pictures it looks as if her tan points have turned into silver points. And McKinely has lots of cool gear.

A merle and tan girl named McKinley.

And we love this picture of McKinley as it shows off her bi-color eyes so well.

A merle and tan girl named McKinley.

And this is the latest picture that we have received of McKinley, in January of 2011, at two and a half years old, and she has completely turned into a merle and silver marked dog.

A black and tan girl named Giovanna shown at four months old.

And Giovanna is a little doll at four months, and we love her hair bow. And Giovanna is a black and tan that eventually turned into a black and silver, with white tuxedo markings and a "milk ring" on her muzzle, which is a white marking around her nose that looks as if she has dipped her muzzle in milk.

A black and tan girl named Giovanna shown at seven months old.

And here's Giovanna at about seven months old, out for a walk.

A black and tan girl named Giovanna.

And here's Giovanna all grown up. A black and silver girl named Gracie Lou who lives with her family in Jacksonville, Florida.

And Gracie Lou, a black and silver girl, is another of the four dark girls, and she lives with her family in Jacksonville, Florida. And Gracie Lou has silver points, but her silver markings are so light that they look white and meld with her white tuxedo markings.

And here's Gracie Lou getting her dog training certifiate.

A sable-merle girl named Dixie who lives with her family in St. Augustine, Florida.

And the fourth dark girl from that litter is a sable-merle named Dixie. And although she was born a dark red color with a black mask and ear tips, and some black hairs across her shoulder blades, Dixie's color has lightened up considerably as she grew older. And her merle markings have somewhat diluted her black hairs also. And Dixie lives with her family in St. Augustine, Florida.

And here's a picture of Dixie playing on the beach.

Our litter of four dark girls.

But this picture of our litter of four dark Bologco girls, taken at a day old, shows how dark colored Dixie was as a newborn. And Dixie is the brownish-red colored one, and her black mask and black ears were very evident at this age. And the two black girls are Giovanna and Gracie Lou--who both turned out to be black and silvers--and of course the spotted puppy is McKinley. And we hear over and over from our Bologco buyers that many of the ligher colored Bologcos turn even lighter colors over time, or if they have tan points then their tan points lighten over time too.

A black and silver girl named Chloe with a sable-merle girl named Dixie.

And Dixie loves to play with her Bologco friend Chloe, who is a younger black and silver girl from one of our 2009 Bologco litters that lives only two doors away. And Chloe's family came to us for a Bologco puppy because they liked Dixie so much. And many of our Bologco sales are to people who have seen one of our Bologcos in person.

A black and silver girl named Chloe.

And this is a larger picture of Chloe, and she is another black and silver girl whose silver markings are so pale that they fade into her white tuxedo markings. And we love Chloe's silver eyebrows!

A black Bologco girl with white tuxedo markings.

And then there is Cookie, who is a black Boloco girl with very striking looking white tuxedo markings and she often sports a long white beard.

A black Bologco girl with white tuxedo markings.

And we love this picture of Cookie in full coat so much that we have used it several times on this website. And Cookie has some brown tones in her beard which may mean that she is actually a light seal marked dog, and she some lighter gray tones closer to her skin when the hair is pulled back. But Cookie still presents as basically a black dog with white tuxedo markings.

And while Cookie lives on a horse farm in Archer, Florida, she is a traveling girl, and here she is enjoying the view of the coastline in Maine.

Cookie is much loved, and Bologcos generally do very well with older children.

A black masked sable boy at six weeks old.

And the black masked sable male puppy shown above is from one of our early 2010 litters, shown at six weeks old. And this puppy looked almost solid black when he was born, but he should turn a gorgeous silver color once he is grown, which will contrast beautifully with his large black mask and black ear tips that are the hallmark of the sable marking in most dog breeds.

A black masked sable boy at six weeks old.

And we love receiving pictures of our puppies all grown up, and the black and silver Bologco girl shown on the left above is named Gracie Lou, and she now has a younger sable marked Bologco companion named Lucy. And these two Bologco girls live with their family in St. Augustine, Florida.

A black masked sable boy at six weeks old.

And this adorable little girl is a solid merle, with a few white markings on her chest and on her muzzle, from a Spring 2010 Bologco litter, and she is also named Chloe. And this Chloe lives in the Ft. Myers area of Florida.

A black masked sable girl shown at nine months old.

And Gabby is a very striking looking Bologco girl, and she is also from a Spring 2010 litter. And Gabby is a solid sable marked dog with a black mask and black ear tips, over an apricot colored undercoat, and she is shown in the picture above at nine months old. And Gabby lives with another Bologco girl--a black and silver named Giovanna--at their home in Marietta, Georgia.

A black masked sable-merle girl named Dixie shown at ten months old.

And above is a picture of another solid sable girl, named Dixie, fom a Spring 2010 litter, who lives with her Bologco, seal marked half sister named Maggie with their family in Citrus Springs, Florida. And this Dixie has a lighter colored undercoat than Gabby has--more cream colored than Gabby's apricot color--plus this Dixie is also a merle, and she has partially blue eyes. And so far we have bred seven girls that have been named Dixie over the years, including our own seal marked Kobetan girl with that name.

A seal marked Bologco girl named Maggie shown at about a year and a half old.

And Maggie is a seal marked dog from a late 2009 Bologco litter. And a seal marked dog is a dark colored dog with another lighter color mixed all through the coat--usually a reddish tan color--but sometimes a grayish-silver color in bearded dogs. And Maggie lives with Dixie and her family in Citrus Springs, Florida, and she is shown above at about a year and a half old.

Maggie and Dixie playing together.

And their owner says that Maggie and Dixie play with each all day long, running circles chasing each other out in their fenced back yard.

Maggie and Dixie playing together.

And although both Maggie and Dixie are half sisters, with the same Bichon Bolognese sire--and their dams are also closely related small Cocker girls--the two girls have different coat types, with Maggie's coat being denser and somewhat curlier than Dixie's coat. So Maggie's coat is kept clipped a bit shorter than Dixie's. And although at first glance Maggie looks like a solid black colored dog, she is actually a seal marked dog, which is a dark colored dog that has lighter hairs sprinkled throughout her coat.

Maggie in the car.

And Maggie and Dixie travel quite a bit in the car with their owners, and the different colors in Maggie's coat can be seen fairly well in this picture of her taken in a car.

Cali is a black and silver Bologco girl with white markings.

And Cali is a black and tan girl, with white markings from a Spring 2010 litter, shown above at six months old. And Cali lives in the Melbourne, Florida area with one of our sable and white Cocker boys named Cody.

And we thank the owners of all of the above dogs for allowing us to use their pictures of their dogs on our website.
