Max is one of the most beautifully colored American Cockers that we have ever seen, and one of the sweetest natured. He loves people and attention, and he loves being the King of our dogs. Max is our premier male here, and he is the sire of all of our first generation American Cocker dogs, and almost every Cocker here can trace its pedigree back to Max.
Max is a medium sized Cocker, but he threw a wide variety of sizes, no matter who he was bred with, from some very small Cockers to standard sized one. And Max threw the widest variety of colors of any dog, bar none, that we have ever met.
Max is also a most unusual Cocker in that he appears to be a mahogany red sable and white dog, but he is also a hidden or cryptic merle, which means that he does not show any merle hairs at all on his body, but he threw about half merle puppies. And although his two blue eyes are a clue to Max being a merle, the merle marking is not the only cause of blue eyes in dogs.
Max is very energetic and playful, despite his older age, and he loves to spend the day running around his own special dog yard, as he is no longer a breeding dog here due to his age. But he loves his "girls," and he always has a girl with him, and he is definately still "all male." And he guards against anything strange or unusual, and he just loves to bark at the riding mower. But he is also very smart and obedient, and he will heel while walking at our side, and he will chase and retrieve tennis balls all day long. We feel that our Max is just an altogether delightful dog with a great big heart. But one thing he does not like doing is being groomed and posed for photos, as his expression shows in the photo to the right.
But what people notice most about our Max are his absolutely beautiful big blue eyes.
The only dog here that Max could not "boss around" was our Shepherd-Chow-Husky girl, as she was quite a bit larger than he is, but she and Max got along quite well together. We rescued this girl from going to a dog pound at 11 weeks old, and she was one of our very good guard dogs on our property, all of whom are rescues. But this girl is now gone over the Rainbow Bridge.
Max is very curious and loves to follow us around. Here we snapped a picture of him in our greenhouse, where he was very careful not to break or knock over any plants.
Max is a very obedient dog and he will willingly heel.
And Max is a very friendly dog with just about everyone.
Max loves his treats.
Max really does love sleeping in his big blue crate, with his pink carpet--it's a very Florida decor. We strongly believe in crate training, as dogs are "denners" and crates make them feel secure. However, our dogs do not spend any real amount of time in crates, as we have very roomy outdoor kennels and spacious outdoor dog yards. But we do bring in all of the dogs on the occasional nights when the weather gets really cool, or when we are threatened with storms and hurricanes, and then every dog gets his or her own crate to sleep in.
And we do like to have all of our dogs crate trained for trips to the vet, as using crates for these trips are safer than letting them loose in the vehicle. And Max especially likes to retreat to his crate when there are young puppies around, although when he was younger he would tolerate very young pups. But now we keep other dogs from bothering the old guy.
Max can really be a clown, and here he is, clowning it up, hanging his head off of the tailgate of the truck.
Max is very energetic and moves all of the time, even on a leash, and even on the back of a truck. But Max's very richly colored, shaded sable markings can really be seen in this picture.
Max has very interesting markings, with an obvious mantle, but he has white incursions into his mantle, so he is technically a parti Cocker and not Irish marked.
But Max looks very different clipped! And in the Summer we clip most of the dogs practically down to the skin, everywhere but on the tips of his ears, and Max has a wonderful time running around out in the dog yards all Summer without all of that hair. And one thing that we do really like about "clipped dogs" is that we can actually see their muscles rippling as they move. And our dogs do have quite a lot of muscle, and our vet comments on it almost every time that she sees one of them--as they get so much outdoor exercise.
But Max has such a beautiful coat when it is long that we are really glad that we have a lot of pictures of him when he did have some long hair. And Max does have a black mask, but only part of his mask shows on the left side of his muzzle, as the rest of his mask is hidden by some of his white markings.
Max can be serious looking at times, but not very often, so this is an unusual picture of him. But it certainly shows off his big blue eyes.
But then Max can look pretty funny!
Max and Sparkle hung out together a lot, especially by this gate, as they are both very treat oriented, and treats come through the gate.
Max was such a cute and happy puppy, and he was whelped on October 23, 2000 at a Missouri kennel. He came as a puppy to a kennel in West Palm Beach Florida, where he eventually had four litters, and we brought Max here to Northcentral Florida as a three year old proven adult stud dog.
And Max is the epitome of Cockers to us, always seeming to smile, and he always acts very happy. And his blue eyes make him seem almost human when he looks at you, and we do wish that he had thrown more puppies with blue eyes. But he has thrown very few puppies with light eyes, and he has only thrown one puppy that looks like him, named Ditto, who lives in South Florida.
We have a glass-artist friend who was so impressed with Max's blue eyes that she designed and made this little glass tile clock for us, based on Max's face and coloring.
To see Max's pedigree, please go to Max's pedigree page. However Max's colors are not correct on his AKC pedigree, as he is not a black tri as indicated (Black white & tan) but is actually a sable-merle and white. But at the time that Max was born, merles were not well known in Cockers, and Max's merle markings are totally hidden by his sable markings. So his first owners just put down the colors that they thought that they saw on him, taking his mahogany red sable markings as "tan".
And Max has the prettiest feathering when his coat is grown out.
